It’s August and everything is delicious. There is something magical about the month of August, I don’t know what it is but I love this month. I’ve spent Augusts in both the Southern and Northern Hemispheres and its the same magic everywhere in the world.
As the first of August dawned I got that familiar feeling of optimism , of fun, of new beginnings. I’ve been thinking of all the Augusts I’ve had-and since I’m 300 years old there have been a lot- and I cannot think of a single bad August.
In the Southern Hemisphere I trudge through the misery of a June/July winter and then august appears and the sun comes out more and stays a little longer as we edge towards spring, in the Northern Hemisphere I sweat through the stifling heat of a June/July summer and then August comes and the breeze blows again and my skin rejoices… there is Magic in August.
Thinking of all my Augusts I remember the thrilling August of rehearsing and opening ‘Hairspray’, basking in the sun outside the theatre with rollers in my hair laughing with my cast mates, the August weekends watching the sun rise and set over Lake Waramaug with a glass of ice cold white wine making memories with friends, Augusts wandering the streets and beaches of the Bahamas with friends and co-workers toasting our good fortune with fresh coconuts, August Sundays looking at mountains and vineyards sharing artisan cheese, meats and breads with my parents and siblings, hot August nights on Deck 14 or in the crew bar when Tara has yet again successfully convinced me to dance with her until 2am, summer picnics in the parks, winter birthdays parties on farms…yes there certainly is magic in August.

According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary ‘August’ means marked by majestic dignity or grandeur.
The August birthstone is a Peridot which symbolizes dignity, fame and prosperity and is used in Jewelry to achieve peace and success and to attract love and good fortune.
The August flower is a Gladiolus which some say represents strength of character, integrity and persistence.
In numerology the number ‘8’ is associated with power and strength, 8 is the symbol of infinity and a constant flow of energy and power. 8 is the number of universal equilibrium.
With all this in mind its no wonder I feel at my most creative/useful/ powerful in August. The cobwebs of cold winters or stifling summers melt away and everything seems clearer, the creative juices flow in abundance…its heavenly, my own mini new years where I get to reset, regroup and set plans for the rest of the year in motion.
‘8’ is my favorite number and August is the 8th month perhaps that’s why I cling to her the way I do-who knows-. When Taylor Swift gifted us the ‘folklore’ album she gave us a song titled ‘august’ a masterpiece whose lyrics include '“August…..back when I was living for the hope of it all” and that is truly how August feels . Like a time when anything is possible. Thanks to this song every August first my Instagram and Twitter feeds are filled with friends and fellow swifties quoting the lyrics and it seems we all take a collective breath and sigh, our faces turned towards the sun while our shoulders relax. To me everyone seems happier and more content in August.
So here’s to August for the dreamers, the doers, the new chapters, the fresh pages and refilled energies. May we always “live for the hope of it all”
xoxo
